Hi! Does anyone remember the name of the haibeauty store that was across from FYE in the 2000s? It’s been out of business for a while but my friends and I have some fun memories of going to that store and we can’t seem to remember its name. Thanks for your help!

2022.01.20 04:05 bavetta Fenn and the Boy Scouts

Fenn and the Boy Scouts Fenn's origin story
From Fenn's website:
The urge to collect started for Forrest Fenn at age nine when he found his first arrowhead. It was just lying there in a plowed field on Little Elm Creek in Central Texas, waiting for him to come along. He still claims it is the most treasured object in his collection. “It was a thrill that started me on a long journey of adventure and discovery,” he said. (source)
From a 1971 interview:

(Source - Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Aug 28, 1971)
This newspaper article seems to be the only place where Fenn mentions he was in the scouts.

Fenn's Boy Scout Poem
In Too Far to Walk Forrest told the story of his first arrowhead, and directly introduced a poem his dad had sent him a few years before he died.
The thrill of finding my first arrowhead ranks among my fondest memories. It was not the arrowhead alone that marked the event; it was also that my father was there to share it with me. I have long remembered the expression on his face as he watched mine. A few years before he died, he sent me this poem. Some words can be worth a thousand pictures. (Page 249 TFTW).
As it turns out, the full-page poem in Too Far to Walk pg 250 is ripped out of the 1936 Boy Scout Handbook. And it is right when you open the book - BEFORE THE TABLE OF CONTENTS! This seems like a blaring hint - why didn't Fenn mention he found the arrowhead while in the scouts, but instead covertly included this boy scout poem?
Printed in Boy's Life magazine (the Boy Scout magazine), and the 1936 Boy Scout Handbook.

Norman Rockwell
The drawings in TTOTC are famously nearly all based on Norman Rockwell paintings. Guess who made the cover of the 1936 Boy Scout Handbook?

Tying Knots
Knowing how to tie various knots is a requirement for becoming a Boy Scout.
Fenn said he made a giant ball of string and he would,
"tie one end of the new piece of string onto the end of the last one. I knew all of the good tricks, and one was to tie only square knots so they wouldn’t slip."
Pg. 80 of the Boy Scout manual has knots and the Square Knot says,
"the commonest knot for tying to ropes of even thickness together. [...] Never slips or jams [...]"

Fenn's Obsession with Feet
"I had no money, no coat, and no shoes." "so I started walking on the paved road in my socks" "I thought about bailing out of the car, and probably would have if I'd had my shoes on" "I lost my shoes in the ordeal"
Is this a hint to the first rank of a Boy Scout, Tenderfoot?

Buffalos
The Silver Buffalo Award is the Boy Scout award for distinguished service.
Fenn had a couple of stories about Buffalos. About wrangling the buffalo, Fenn said
the worst part of that episode was walking seven miles barefooted (source)
The "Fourteen Mile Hike" was "Requirement 5" to become a First Class Scout. I wonder if the buffalo story is an allegory for Fenn striving to get the silver buffalo award, and doing this 14-mile hike (7 miles out and back) while he was barefoot rank (?).

Cub Scout
When Fenn found the arrowhead (at age 9), he wasn't old enough for the Boy Scouts
To become a Scout a boy must be at least twelve years of age.
Fenn would have actually been a Cub Scout.

Speculation
I faintly remember reading that at a book signing someone asked Forrest if he was a Boy Scout and Forrest said he didn't remember. I found that awfully strange - it seems like one would remember if they were in the Boy Scouts or not. (I'd love to find this source, if you know, please remind me)
Since Fenn was in the Cub Scouts when his chase began, it is interesting that Jack Stuef mentioned Cub Creek
[in response to "I just spent 2 days scouring Cabin Creek"] I've been here too and think this is one of only a few possible spots in the area, but I don't think the clues start to fall into place until you come across Cub Creek ("meek"), and at that point, you've gone pretty far for an 80-year-old carrying a heavy weight.
Fenn's connection to the scouts, especially by printing that poem in TFTW, is undeniable. Why was Fenn trying to hide his association with the scouts - and was it related to the treasure solve?

2022.01.20 04:04 Namu12345 How much of “On Interpretation” makes sense in the English translation?

I’m reading “On Interpretation” in the translation by Edghill. It looks to me that many of the points made there are actually about language than about logic, and partly seem to be specific for his own language. However, I can’t read Ancient Greek.
Is my impression correct? Can one easier get A.’s points made in “On Interpretation” if one knows Greek and can read it in the original?

2022.01.20 04:04 frostydynamics Should I just ignore him the way he ignored me?

We’ve been dating officially for almost a month now, text got lesser and lesser. I (19f) asked him (21m) to compromise since he’s busy (4th year engineering, almost graduation, finding a job for coop) and I want to understand him as well, I said let’s do a conversation 30 minutes before we go to bed and check up on each other once in a while. He said yeah sure let’s try that and he said don’t worry too much, relax, and be in the moment. I was very happy because I thought he was understanding. We had this conversation 3 days ago and yes he did what I asked but even the 30 minutes doesn’t seem like 30 minutes because there are always pause in between and he’s always like “I have to go to bed super tired”. I understand he’s tired but I feel like I’m being reasonable in asking him to talk to be 30 minutes from the whole day? Today is even worst, he did not even reply / text me goodnight or our 30 minutes time isn’t even there. Our last conversation is like “What’s up what’s up” and I’m like “hi babe” “to the one who’s always ignoring my questions” (this is the first time I called him babe btw) and he didn’t reply. Every time I asked some questions after he goes to bed, he just ignored the whole question I wrote and just said “Hey what’s up” or “Morning”. I have to ask him again the second / third time. He said he’s too tired to type sometimes. Idk how to feel about this, I’m totally OK with him being busy as long as he explains (eg. “I’m busy talk later”) instead of “ghosting” me and keeps me waiting. I know this sounds childish but should I just ignore him the way he ignored me? I tried my best, tried communicating, but things don’t go back the way it used to be before we dated officially. Do guys usually just stop putting effort once a girl become their gf? Please enlighten me. Thank you! :)

Nothing too interesting, yet...
Update: well nothing interesting but I keep hearing something above me in the panels but I believe it's just my mind playing tricks. The Buzz of these lights could drive a man crazy. The hard flooring makes it easy to tell if someone's or something is around, both the sound of the tile and dust, Yeah! Dust theres dust in here i cant see how it could be in a place dust really shouldnt , im getting off topic anyhow after close examination i found a thin layer of dust built up along the shelves and floor, when looked at from a certain angle the light shows this layer and i can see if its been disturbed but theres only one problem, i have no clue how long this \"dust\" takes to build up it could be one hour or one year so if i were to see a disturbence i would have no way of knowing when is happened. sorry for my little dust rant but one more thing i keep finding these redish stains on the ground and when i go to touch them they arent wet nor dry its like its bound into the tile itself, but what do i know i mean ive never been here before one minute im in a endless office building next minute im here. and dont get started on have you found anyone? well bingo answer i havent matter of fact ive only seen one person since i left our world and we split ways only for me to find him made into a nice new wall paint in level 0 honestly what ever did that to the guy had his feet on one end of the room and his head on the other and that was days ago, months even. either way im gonna keep looking and hopefully theres some food or people ive been here long enough.
